The 123rd Battle Of The Ax

It's a 9-Peat For the Denison Yellowjackets

The Battle Of The Ax between Denison and Sherman is the longest consecutive played game in Texas High School football history. The Denison Yellowjackets used a strong rushing attack and swarming defense to win their ninth straight Battle Of the Ax against arch rival Sherman.

Denison running back Jadarian Price lead the Yellowjacket rushing attack with 259 yards rushing and a 69-yard touchdown run on just 22 carries. Jack Aleman added 79 yards and two touchdowns of his own.

Senior quarterback Caleb Heavner threw for 180 yards and two scores. Heavner connected with Trey Rhodes for a 65-yard score and Keegan Pruitt for a 16-yard score in the first half. “We came out in the

first half and executed well. I think we did some good things (offensively) and I also think we need to work on some things” Heavner.


The Yellowjackets defense created three turnovers that came at pivotal times. Senior cornerback and ACU commit Jalik Lewis had an interception that led to points for the Yellowjackets. Sophomore safety Kenyon Kelly had a fumble recovery and interception in the first half.



Junior quarterback Phoenix Grant led the Sherman offense with 152 yards through the air and 52 yards on the ground. Grant threw a touchdown pass to junior wideout Vontrelle Sanders that tied the game in the first half. junior running back Caleb Thompson supplied the rest of the Bearcat points with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Sherman, will travel to Mt. Pleasant (TX) to take on Tigers next week.


The Yellowjacket will play Ft. Worth Brewer next week. Denison first year Head Coach Brent Whitson was excited about getting his first win as the Yellowjackets head coach, but he is already focused on being 2-0. “It critical to this community (beating Sherman), but you know what we have do now? It’s time to go beat somebody after Sherman. It’s (onto) Ft. Worth Brewer from this point on.” Whitson
