Sherman (TX) Too Powerful For Young Rough Riders


Sherman (TX) got off to a fast start to set the tone for a 52-10 victory over a young Saginaw (TX) team. Sherman used a balanced offense and relentless defense to pull out the road victory. The Bearcats move to 2-1 entering district play this week.

Junior running back Caleb Thompson supplied the first Bearcat points with a physical 12-yard touchdown run. Freshman Kane Bowen, who led the team in rushing with 76 yards added two scores too. Collins Muriithi added a 49-yard score and Senior wideout EJ Chapman scored a 1-yard touchdown out of the Wildcat formation for the Bearcats explosive offense also.

Thompson, a two-way player for the Bearcats, spoke about making his carries count and the depth in the backfield. "I know I got to play defense too, so I'm not going to get the rock a lot. So I had to make the most of it. I'm glad many running backs to back me up and good blocks too. The blocks are what really help me in that situation."

Sherman Junior wideout Vontrelle Sanders, hauled in 5 catches for 118 yards including a 50-yard touchdown catch on the Bearcats second drive. Junior wideout Aries Jones scored his first touchdown of the year on a nice fade ball over a defender. When asked about the 50 yard touchdown Sanders said, "I was locked in pregame and doing what I been practicing all week. The hard work over the offseason the Bearcats put in has definitely paid off for them. "It feels good to get win number 2. We worked all summer for this." Sanders


The Sherman defense front spent a lot of time in the the Rough Riders backfield. John Okeri, Tey'vian Knight, K'Von Cox, Jessie Taylor, and Cody Mitchell (pictured at top of page) all registered sacks tackles for loss, and/or turnovers.

Saginaw did have a some positives to take from the night including senior running back Kyle Kennard 60-yard touchdown run. Senior kicker Parker Yoccum scored the first point of the game for Saginaw with a 37-yard field goal. Kennard and the young Rough Riders competed hard to the end and have a lot to build on.


After two straight weeks on the road, Sherman will host district for McKinney (TX) next week. While Saginaw will play Ft. Worth Brewer on the road next week.
